Introduction to Lesson 3
In Chapter 2, you read about the European explorers that came to Canada like John Cabot, Jacques Cartier, and Martin Frobisher. Originally, Europeans came to Canada looking for a Northwest Passage to China. However, they did not find it, but what they found was a land rich in resources and different cultures. In this chapter, you will learn that it was the resources of the land that brought more Europeans here. These Europeans were explorers but were also settlers. This marks the beginning of the European settlement of Canada.
In order for you to learn this material there are three levels of assignments.

Level 2
This assignment is is to use Magnet Idea Cards to create notes on this chapter. Magnet cards have the main idea in the center. Around the main idea are 'magnet' ideas or supporting ideas that are closely connected or attracted to the main idea. The 'magnet' ideas should allow you to write summaries about the main idea. Below is an example of a magnet card for this chapter. So you know the main idea is "Huron". The words around "Huron" are 'magnet' ideas. After reading this chapter, you would be able to write a summary about each of the 'magnet' ideas and how they relate to the Huron. For example, when you read this chapter you will learn that in the 1600's, the Huron grew corn, beans, squash, and tobacco. They did not move around like other First Nations groups. You could write a summary like:
In the 1600's, the Huron were not like the other First Nations groups encountered by Champlain. They were corngrowers. They were farmers who did not move around.
You would then write similar summaries for the other 'magnet' words.
